Bon Vivant | Lunchquest Edinburgh

Today was not my first trip to the Bon Vivant. It wasn?t even my first review of the place, as a few months ago I reviewed their cocktails for Social and Cocktail. But it was the first time I?d eaten there, so it was with considerable Friday vigour motivating my stride that I journeyed towards its welcoming confines.

Interior

I have waxed lyrical on many occasions about the joys of Thistle Street. I?d say along with The Shore and Broughton Street, it forms my top three food and drink thoroughfares in Edinburgh. Along with the Thistle Bar, the Bon Vivant represents the main place to stop for a drink, but also serves a nicely varied all-day menu.

The starters can all be served as ?bites? which is a neat little concept. For a pound a pop, you can order a range of nibble-sized sample dish, in the tapas style. This is a lovely idea for a more refined approach to bar snacking, and also serves to allow diners to explore the range of the chef?s cooking expertise.

Having said all of this, I still opted to start with leek and potato soup! I chose to follow this with John Dory, served with steamed clams and chive risotto.

Soup

My starter took a little moment to arrive, but I was looked after very nicely by the friendly and chatty waitress. It also gave me time to take in the stylish wood and leather interior. The dim lighting and wine-bottle candles give the place a nice tucked-away bistro look, but the place still retains quite a strong pub feel to it.

When the soup arrived, it was towards the vichyssoise end of the leek and potato spectrum, and was extremely tasty. The seasoning was perfectly judged, and the texture light. It was a beautifully summery interpretation of the dish, which although at odds with the prevailing overcast conditions, was completely delightful.

The main course was very good, although it had a couple of technical mistakes. Firstly, the fish wasn?t the most uniformly cooked fishy I?ve ever eaten and the skin should have been crispier. The risotto could have been a trifle looser, but perhaps that?s personal preference. Finally, the dish needed a big squeeze of citrus, or actually a light, refreshing glass of white wine to accompany it would probably have worked equally well.

John Dory, clams and risotto

With these items resolved and the execution nailed, this would be a 5/5 exceptional dish, as the balance of flavours was just lovely. Even with the errors it was still very good and a highly satisfying plate of goodness.

So overall, the Bon Vivant serves really impressive food, in lovely surroundings. The service couldn?t be friendlier, but could be a trifle speedier. But for a relaxed lunch in a smart pub setting, there are few better places in our fair city. Bravo, chaps ? I enjoyed my visit very much.

As 'Prometheus' debuts, why 'Alien' remains a cinematic icon 33 years later

'Prometheus' arrives in theaters today, but people are still talking about 'Alien,' the 1979 Ridley Scott predecessor.

It?s one of the most famous taglines in film history, even more recognizable than ?Play it again, Sam? or ?Houston, we have a problem? ? and it?s only one of many that appeared on ?Alien? posters in 1979.

?Once again something has come from space and this time, it?s not a friend,? one said. ?Prepare yourself,? warned another.

In a post-?Jaws? and ?Star Wars? world, the demand for big-budget thriller and science-fiction movies was high. Ridley Scott, who won the Best Debut Film award in 1977 for his historical drama ?The Duellists,? accepted an offer to direct a film about a team of astronauts picked off one by one by a hostile space organism. Thus, the birth of ?Alien? ? which Scott has revisited 33 years later in the form of a prequel, ?Prometheus.?

The enormous hype surrounding the $120-130 million ?Prometheus,? which revisits the mysterious ?space jockey? in ?Alien,? suggests the cultural power of the latter. Not only did the Nostromo crew?s battle against the alien astound and alarm audiences in 1979, it established a new genre of female action hero and it has remained a topic of conversation in Hollywood boardrooms and around kitchen tables.

??Alien? was an acid-burned anecdote to the dewy-eyed optimism of ?Close Encounters? and ?Star Wars,?" one documentary feature says. ?This was future fantasy with razor-sharp fangs, a groundbreaking genre classic which gave nightmarish fall to unspeakable anxieties.?

Intent on making ?Alien? better than a B-rated movie, co-writers Dan O?Bannon and Ron Shusett were unsure what the hostile organism should look like, or how it would get aboard Nostromo. All they knew is that it needed to be ?horrific and visceral.? One night, Shusett woke up with the inspiration he needed ? the facehugger, which plants an alien embryo inside Executive Officer Kane (John Hurt).

Upon realizing Kane has been contaminated, warrant officer Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) refuses to let him aboard Nostromo. This proves to be the first of many instances in which Ripley displays better judgment than her superiors. She is the only survivor at the end of ?Alien? and has since become the face of the franchise, rated No. 1 on Total Film?s list of the 100 Greatest Female Characters.

Eventually, the alien inside Kane bursts from his chest and begins its murderous rampage. Unlike films of the time like ?Star Wars? ? although similar to ?Jaws? ? the man-versus-monster battle takes place in a confined area with no way out. And as the great white shark did for ?Jaws,? fear of the unknown (and of silence) catapulted ?Alien? to big box office numbers and critical acclaim.

Why College Students Should Use Helium, Part Four: The Content Marketplace

Jun 8 2012

? ?

Today is the final installment in our series on why college students should use Helium.

?

The Helium content marketplace

And so we?ve come full circle. All of this sounds great, but it all comes back to money. Can you make more than one or two dollars per article? Yes! Writers on Helium who consistently produce good articles and rate intelligently have the opportunity to write for Helium Content Source. This is a marketplace where major publishers purchase content from strong writers at much higher rates. Think of it like a promotion. Your reward for working hard and improving your craft is the chance to move to the next level and make more money. The great thing about Content Source is your credentials are still secondary to your writing. Having a strong background can only help you, but ultimately, like everything at Helium, it?s great writing that matters most.

Don?t let age or inexperience stop you from checking out Helium. Stephen King sold Carrie when he was twenty-four. Michael Crichton found representation for The Andromeda Strain when he was in medical school. Christopher Paolini published Eragon when he was nineteen! Is everyone a King, Crichton or Paolini? Of course not, but age didn?t stop them, and it shouldn?t stop you. Good writing doesn?t discriminate.

Head to www.helium.com, sign up and start writing today. Everyone is waiting.

Learn the Career of a Technical Writer | CAREEREALISM

Technical Writer CareerHave you ever considered pursuing a career as a Technical Writer? This interview takes you through the ups and downs you can expect, what it takes to land the job, what you can expect to earn and more. This is a true career story as told to DiversityJobs and is one of many interviews with editors and publishers.

I have been working in the market research industry as a technical writer for over three years. A normal day at work includes researching and writing market reports about various industries, mainly composites, thermoplastics, and energy. I also create guides for businesses who are either starting up or are looking to expand into new regions or markets.

Many people think that as a technical writer, I spend all day writing incredibly intricate, detailed, and complicated reports; however, some of my projects are as simple as a report about the background of an industry or company.

I would rate my happiness at my current job at a six. Not because I find it difficult or because it isn?t what I want to do, but because my current employer does not offer as much variety as I would like. In my three years working with this company, I have only composed so many different reports. Most of them are industry analyses, opportunity evaluations, press releases, and presentations. I would really like to break out of these reports and write with more freedom, really stretching my creative muscles.

I would not say that this is my calling in life. I do love to write, but like I said earlier, there is not enough variety for me. I would really like to be a college professor and researcher. While I was in college, I did some teaching here and there and it really helps you understand what you?re passionate about.

College is a great place to grow as an individual even if you?re not a student and I would love to go back and teach while continuing to research and write. Many people are shocked to learn that, as a technical writer, I did not get a degree in any of the industries about which I write.

It is a common misconception that you need to get a degree in chemical engineering to write reports about composites, but I got a degree in English and Writing. There was a steep learning curve at first, but I feel very comfortable writing about chemicals, energy, and composites. Plus, I always have co-workers who are researching the same thing and I can ask them questions if I need help understanding a particular concept.

I actually came into this industry on a whim. I mentioned earlier I did a bit of teaching in college. I was actually aiming to be a high school teacher, but my internship changed my mind and I decided to pursue another career.

I started looking for writing and editing jobs because I love research and writing. I just happened to make the right decision! My path took me in a different direction and I?m happy with where I am now.

The most important lesson I?ve learned is that the kind of student you are in college is the kind of working adult you will become. Students think that they can cruise through college and become serious when they get a job. The fact is that those habits are really hard to break.

I can tell which of my co-workers coasted through college. It is harder for them to manage their time and realize when they are doing their best work or when they need to work harder. Those habits are hard to break.

The strangest thing that?s ever happened to me as a technical writer was actually when I was helping the editors get through some reports to be published.

Apparently, one of my fellow writers either had not learned about plagiarism in college or did not care that he was stealing someone else?s work. We found that a majority of his reports were copy and pasted from internet articles. I put them straight into a search engine and found whole paragraphs on other websites. It was strange that he thought he could do that and get away with it!

There are numerous challenges in working with the production of reports and projects, mainly the fact that so many people look at and evaluate your work. Then, your report gets bounced around between editors and supervisors until it finally comes back to you for rework or to be released.

Sometimes the editors and managers actually help you clarify a point of improve the flow of your work. Other times, they will completely butcher a paragraph you were really proud of writing.?I will get reports back from editing and the entire meaning is changed because they did not understand what I was trying to say, even though it was right. It can be really frustrating!

My job can be very stressful because we have very strict deadlines. I try to stay on top of my work so I am less stressed when deadlines approach.
