President?s Memorial Day Weekend Remarks?

I?m not going to hammer him. But I think this day was/is meant to honor our dead, not the living. The living have two days devoted to them, this one is for those that gave their last measure of devotion to this country and for those that served and eventually passed on. It is our duty to remember them for their sacrifices.

?Duty then is the sublimest word in the English language. You should do your duty in all things. You can never do more, you should never wish to do less.?
10 points if you guess who said that.

At any rate, here?s President Obama?s remarks:

Remarks of President Barack Obama
Weekly Address
The White House
May 26, 2012

This weekend, folks across the country are opening up the pool, firing up the grill, and taking a well-earned moment to relax. But Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend. In town squares and national cemeteries, in public services and moments of quiet reflection, we will honor those who loved their country enough to sacrifice their own lives for it.

This Memorial Day, Michelle and I will join Gold Star families, veterans, and their families at Arlington National Cemetery. We?ll pay tribute to patriots of every generation who gave the last full measure of devotion, from Lexington and Concord to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Later that day, we?ll join Vietnam veterans and their families at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial?the Wall. We?ll begin to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. It?s another chance to honor those we lost at places like Hue, Khe Sanh, Danang and Hamburger Hill. And we?ll be calling on you?the American people?to join us in thanking our Vietnam veterans in your communities.

Even as we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice, we reaffirm our commitment to care for those who served alongside them?the veterans who came home.? This includes our newest generation of veterans, from Iraq and Afghanistan.

We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us: By making sure that they get the healthcare and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect.

Our men and women in uniform took an oath to defend our country at all costs, and today, as members of the finest military the world has ever known, they uphold that oath with dignity and courage. As President, I have no higher honor than serving as their Commander-in-Chief.? But with that honor comes a solemn responsibility ? one that gets driven home every time I sign a condolence letter, or meet a family member whose life has been turned upside down.

No words can ever bring back a loved one who has been lost. No ceremony can do justice to their memory. No honor will ever fill their absence.

But on Memorial Day, we come together as Americans to let these families and veterans know that they are not alone. We give thanks for those who sacrificed everything so that we could be free. And we commit ourselves to upholding the ideals for which so many patriots have fought and died.

Thank you, God bless you, and have a wonderful weekend.

And don't forget to check with a real estate lawyer should you face any aspects of a property exchange that you don't understand.

When buying a home, put down at least twenty percent of the house?s selling price as your down-payment. If you put down less than this amount, you'll often be need to buy non-public mortgage insurance (PMI). This fee is around half of a %, which would be about $1000 a year on a $200,000 house.

Understand the diversities between all the differing kinds of mortgage loans that are out there. Because there are many various options available when it comes to loans, you want to be certain to make the right choice for you and your folks. By doing your research, you'll be capable of making a sensible decision.

Never start a property negotiation by making a low-ball offer you do not expect to pay. Your opening bid should invariably be a reasonable price. Low-balling divides the seller your are dealing with, and sets a combative tone for the remainder of the negotiation. It's much better by far to keep the entire sales process easy and honest.

Do not buy the 1st house you see and do not jump on a home because it is inexpensive or will close quickly. Do research, see other houses, and keep track of offers. By rushing into a purchase, you may skip steps like doing an inspection or buy something that you don?t actually like.

A key tip when buying real-estate is to be certain that you have a reputable real-estate agent. Your real-estate agent should be helping you review the documents and get you the best offer practical. If you sense that they are not the best at their job, it may be a good idea to find a new real-estate agent.

Home purchasers or any other kind of real estate shopper would do very well to aim for fixer-uppers in contrast to new, perfect homes. If you're prepared to provide the finishing touches on a property, you can save thousands upon thousands of bucks by putting in the work yourself. Purchasing brand new means you'll pay lots more.

When planning out how much house you can afford to buy, remember to work out in the maintenance costs of the home. Upkeep is one of the costliest factors in owning a home, but it's something many first time home purchasers will forget. Once you own the home, your property owner is no longer responsible if a pipe breaks, so economize for circumstances.

It?s all about making the right decision as a property buyer. If you're approaching buying without the correct information about the market, you could finish up losing money in a multitude of alternative ways. Use the tips that you have just learned here, to ensure that you purchase the best real-estate available.

India rejects Siachen demilitarisation

NEW DELHI - Indian Chief of the Army staff Gen VK Singh has said that General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani's remarks on Siachen's demilitarisation could not be taken seriously.
Last month, Kayani had told media that both Pakistan and India should talk about pulling out troops from the region and spend more on the development and prosperity of their people. However, he made it clear that it should not be taken as Pakistan's weakness. In an interview to Times Now, the Indian general rejected Kayani?s proposal to demilitarise the Siachen Glacier. "These are all gimmicks that keep coming from the establishment in Pakistan and we will be fools if we fall for them," Singh maintained.
"Today you are sitting in dominating heights which cannot be given away. I am sorry. Who is going to look after them? Today, your infrastructure is pretty well advanced. We are perfectly okay up there," Singh said.
The Indian army chief also criticized ?The Indian Express? report of April 4 about how troop movements near the capital on the night of January 16 - the day General Singh moved the Supreme Court - rang alarm bells in the highest levels of the government. He described the news item as part of an ?agenda? and said the newspaper's Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta, who was one of the authors of the report, had met him over lunch and asked him ?questions? about the troop movements.
When asked if this conversation was on the record, Singh said Gupta was not recording the discussion, but he was quite sure no journalist in the world had ever been off the record." His response was ?No?, while answering a question whether his ?side of the story? was taken. Sindh alleged that someone in the government leaked his confidential letter to the prime minister on glaring weaknesses in defence preparedness.
When asked how it was done, Singh said neither he nor anyone close to him was the source of the leak. "In army, we don't do things like this. It is not our culture. Let us find out who leaked it," he said. When asked if somebody within the government or outside leaked the letter, he replied: "Has to be within the government, who will be outside?" Interestingly, just three days before his retirement, Singh also regretted moving Supreme Court on his date of birth issue, but questioned the manner in which the highest court of the land, and a judge on the bench, treated his petition.

Harper homers as Strasburg, Nats beat Braves

By CHARLES ODUM

ATLANTA (AP) - Washington relied on its offense for its second straight win over Atlanta, leaving manager Davey Johnson feeling relaxed and happy.

Bryce Harper homered and Danny Espinosa added a three-run shot to help Washington strengthen its hold on first place in the NL East by beating the struggling Atlanta Braves 8-4 on Saturday.

Following Friday night's 7-4 win in the series opener, the Nationals have scored seven or more runs in back to back games for the first time this season.

"The offense scoring seven runs two days in a row, I feel like I'm on vacation or something," Johnson said.

Stephen Strasburg (5-1) was not sharp, but backed by the Nationals' 12 hits, he still won. He set a season high with four walks while giving up four runs and six hits in five innings. He had six strikeouts.

"He's usually the one picking us up and we picked him up today," Johnson said.

"I just don't think he had a good feel of the fastball. He was throwing good and hard. There was nothing physically wrong with him."

The temperature for the first pitch was 90 degrees, and Strasburg soon was shaking sweat off his right arm between pitches. The heat may have contributed to Strasburg's difficulty controlling his fastball.

"I'd try one thing and it wouldn't work and I'd try another thing and it wouldn't work," Strasburg said. "It was just one of those days. I'm not really happy with it, but the bottom line is we won."

The Braves' season-worst losing streak reached six games as they fell three games behind the Nationals.

Before the game, the Braves placed Chipper Jones on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a bruised left leg.

Dan Uggla's two-run, tying homer in the fifth was the big hit for the short-handed Braves.

Catcher Brian McCann is still recovering from an illness and did not start. First baseman Freddie Freeman was a late scratch as he continues to struggle with his vision while wearing contacts.

"We're not playing particularly well right now," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "And there are no excuses. We've just need to get it going.

"I like the fact that we battled back against Strasburg."

Juan Francisco had three hits, including a double off Tom Gorzelanny to lead off the ninth. Craig Stammen gave a one-out walk to pinch-hitter Jack Wilson. Tyler Clippard earned his third save by striking out Michael Bourn and ending the game on McCann's pinch-hit popout.

Espinosa doubled off Mike Minor to lead off the game and scored on Adam LaRoche's fly ball. Espinosa pushed the lead to 4-0 with his three-run homer off Minor in the second.

Francisco had a run-scoring single and fill-in catcher J.C. Boscan also drove in a run in the second inning.

The Braves pulled even at 4-4 on Uggla's homer off Strasburg. The Nationals answered with two runs off Kris Medlen (1-1) in the sixth.

Pinch-hitter Chad Tracy's double drove in Ian Desmond, who doubled. Tracy pulled up with an apparent groin injury between first and second and had to leave the game.

Johnson said Tracy was hopeful he "just popped some scar tissue" and won't have to go on the disabled list.

Rick Ankiel, the pinch-hitter for Strasburg, added a run-scoring triple off the center-field wall. Michael Bourn appeared set to make the catch before backing into the wall, losing his balance and the ball.

Washington added two runs off Jonny Venters in the seventh. Harper lined his third homer over the left-field wall. Ryan Zimmerman singled and scored on LaRoche's double.

There were loud boos for Jason Heyward in the fifth inning when he bobbled a single by Harper in right field for an error and then took a lackadaisical approach to picking up the ball as Harper raced to second base.

"I just saw he wasn't coming up on it hard and I took advantage of that," Harper said.

Minor gave up four runs on six hits in five innings, marking the sixth straight start he has allowed four or more runs. His ERA climbed slightly to 6.98.

"I feel like there are more positives out of this game than the previous games," Minor said. "It was another home run, it was four runs. But I feel like I pitched a lot better. I used all my pitches today."

NOTES: Johnson announced after the game RHP Chien-Ming Wang will move into LHP Ross Detwiler's spot in the rotation, and Detwiler will work out of the bullpen. Wang earned the win in his season debut as he gave up one run in three innings after relieving Detwiler in Friday night's 7-4 win. ... Boscan was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett when Jones was placed on the DL. ... Atlanta RHP Brandon Beachy (1.77) and Washington LHP Gio Gonzalez (1.98) will match two of baseball's best ERAs when the teams finish the three-game series on Sunday night.

(AP) ? Three top candidates in Egypt's presidential race filed appeals to the election commission ahead of the deadline Sunday, alleging violations in the first round vote that they say could change the outcome.

The appeals, alleging fraud, are likely to enflame an already explosive race, with two of the most polarizing candidates finishing first.

Preliminary results from last week's election placed Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi and Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, as the two candidates entering a June 16-17 runoff. Thirteen candidates were on the ballot.

Young, liberal secularists who led the popular rebellion that overthrew longtime leader Hosni Mubarak last year failed to place a candidate in the runoff.

A large portion of the vote ? more than 40 percent ? went to candidates who were seen as more in the spirit of the uprising ? neither for the Brotherhood nor for the so-called "feloul," or "remnants" of the old autocratic regime. The so-called revolutionary votes were mostly divided among the candidates who placed third and fourth.

The top finisher, the Brotherhood's Morsi, received only about 25 percent of the vote, according to preliminary results.

Influential Egyptian-born Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, widely respected throughout the Middle East, urged voters to support Morsi in the runoff.

Speaking on the Arabic satellite channel Al-Jazeera Sunday evening, he said the race is not between an Islamist and a non-Islamist, but between "the revolution and the enemies of the revolution."

Shafiq, who placed second after Morsi, filed an appeal to the election commission, saying votes cast for him in one province were not included in the ballot count.

Hamdeen Sabahi, a socialist and a champion of the poor who made a surprisingly strong showing, called for a partial vote recount after he placed third by a margin of around 700,000 votes after Shafiq.

Sabahi's campaign said in a statement Sunday that its representatives met with the elections commission to request that official results not be announced until the eligibility of voters in five provinces is reviewed.

Official first-round results are expected Monday or Tuesday.

"The difference between votes for us and votes cast for some of the other candidates is that ours are legitimate," Sabahi told reporters Saturday.

Abdel-Moneim Abolfotoh, a moderate Islamist who finished fourth, filed his appeal Sunday and also called for official results to be delayed. His lawyer said the campaign has proof that votes were cast on behalf of dead people, and in other cases, bribes were paid for votes.

Overall, the presidential election was considered the country's freest and most transparent in decades. Judges were present at each polling station. International and local monitors, as well as journalists and the candidates' representatives, were allowed to oversee the process in stark contrast to elections under Mubarak.

On Saturday, ex-President Jimmy Carter said his center was restricted in its monitoring mission, but the process was generally acceptable.

The Carter Center said in its report that election authorities prohibited access to media, candidate agents and local and international observers to the final aggregation of national results, "undermining the overall transparency of the process."

The prestigious group also warned it would not monitor elections in Egypt again if the elections commission does not lift a 30-minute observation limit inside polling stations. This restriction, however, was not universally applied.

The Center noted that the election "overshadows other crises," including the fact that the powers of the incoming president are not yet defined.

The writing of a new constitution, which would determine the roles of the president and parliament, was put on hold after liberals walked out of the Islamist-packed committee tasked with the drafting.

A top reform leader, Mohamed ElBaradei, wrote Sunday on his Twitter account, "Our battle is for the constitution, not the president."

Also Sunday, a criminal court convicted Mubarak's former chief of staff of corruption, sentencing him to seven years in prison and fining him $6 million, Egypt's official news agency reported.

Zakaria Azmi, who was also a lawmaker and a senior member of Mubarak's ruling National Democratic Party, used his position to make illicit gains of $7 million, according to the court ruling carried by Egypt's official Middle East News Agency.

The verdict against Azmi comes less than a week before a court is due to issue its verdict in the trial of Mubarak, who faces charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the popular uprising last year. Mubarak, along with Gamal and his other son, Alaa, also faced corruption charges.

Mubarak could receive the death penalty if convicted in the killing of protesters.

Google Penguin Update: Released Version 1.1

No matter that it?s late Friday night on the start of a three-day holiday weekend in the U.S., Google has just pushed out the first update to its recent webspam-fighting Penguin algorithm. Let?s call it Penguin 1.1.

Google?s Matt Cutts announced the news a short time ago on Twitter, calling it a ?data refresh? that impacts less than one-tenth of a percent of English-language searches.

Although webmasters and SEOs have been speculating consistently in recent weeks that Google had already pushed out a Penguin update (or several), Cutts specifically says this is the first update since Penguin launched back on April 24th.

Google has described Penguin as an algorithm change that?s aimed at webspam and, more specifically, ?sites that we believe are violating Google?s quality guidelines.?

Penguin led to immediate outcries from across the SEO industry, with many questioning if it made search results better or worse. Because it?s an algorithmic change, Google said it wouldn?t consider reconsideration requests made via Webmaster Central, but it did setup a form for webmasters to use if they believe Penguin had hit their sites by mistake.

Even though tonight?s update affects a small percentage of English searches, that form is still online.

For more about the Penguin update, see the articles listed below.

Postscript From Danny Sullivan: In the comments below, you?ll see some people wondering if they haven?t recovered from this update, does that means they?ll never recover and should start over. I?d wait a bit longer before that.

After Penguin 1.0 came out, Google said that anyone hit by that had been penalized. But soon after, there were examples of sites that didn?t appear to be spamming Google but which yet had traffic drops.

A few of these might have been false positives, but it?s far more reasonable to assume that when Google wiped out wide swathes of links, some sites that used to benefit from those links lost credit. In other words, they weren?t penalized ? they just didn?t get as much credit as before.

I?m still trying to get Google to confirm this or not, if everyone hit by Penguin 1.0 was really penalized or if there were some who just don?t get as much credit as before, because others were penalized. Stay tuned.

The Basics of Woodworking

There is nothing more fulfilling than having to accomplish a project by one's self. This is what most DIY fans are loving ? the ability to create projects in one's own home. With the many resources on the Internet, crafting is made easier compared to the times when the only sources available were priced magazines and books. Now, anyone can look up plans for building furniture, craft ideas, and furniture styles in the comfort of one's own personal Internet connection at home. The wooden furniture for example, is one of the easiest crafts to do at home as long as the necessary tools and materials are present.

?One of the basic problems that beginners encounter in building wooden furniture is the plans. As for materials and tools, those can easily be purchased in the hardware store for an affordable price. However, when it comes to actual building, there comes the problem of not having a great plan on hand.

Some plans are hard to understand or implement, while some plans lack the important information on building the chosen furniture. This can be such a hassle especially to those who have already started on a project yet find it hard to finish because of the lack of information. Getting complete and easy-to-follow plans for building furniture early on will save one from the unnecessary waste of time, effort and money.

?Once the plan is acquired, the next thing to do is to follow its directions. This includes info on measurements of parts, putting them together, and designing them in the end. Now, for those who have prior training in wood works, this stage would not be of any problem in cutting down wood into specific measurements and sizes. This particular stage comprises the bulk of the furniture building process, since it takes days or even weeks to finish the framework of the project.

?After the building comes the designing phase. This is the easiest part of building the furniture. The builder simply uses paint or varnish to make the project look more attractive and also last longer. Those fully skilled even carve out intricate details on the wood to serve as an ornament to the project. If this is too much, paint or varnish is enough and it can already make the furniture look like it was brought from the store. In the end, woodworking is easy as long as one has time, some great plans for building furniture, and the necessary tools and materials in check.

?What are the benefits in building one's own furniture? For one, it costs less than what the mall or furniture store offers. The cost of buying the wood material and the tools are cheaper, since the stores add a markup cost for labor and distribution. If you like to save a little without compromising comfort, the building your own cabinets and beds will definitely save you bucks. Another benefit is having fulfillment in the results of your work. Surely, woodworking will fascinate one in a way that saves money yet creates a great end-product in the end.
