Review: Samsung Battery Charger Stand for Galaxy Note

Samsung Battery Charger Stand

While digging around for accessories for my Samsung Galaxy Note I wasn't really looking for anything specific. I knew that I wanted to pick up a spare battery due to the fact that I always enjoy knowing I have a spare ready to go but other than that, I wasn't sure what I really wanted until I noticed the Samsung battery charger stand. One small product that actually has quite a few uses all things considered.

When you open the package and get it all unwrapped from the plastic that Samsung chose to wrap it in, the first thing you'll notice is that the stand itself is incredibly light, yet not light enough to say swipe off the side of your table without some force behind it. Basic stuff really, it's made of plastic while the bottom is made of rubber and has rubber soles at the bottom to avoid it sliding around on things that may be slippery.

It's also slim enough that when not using it as a stand for your device, you can close it up toss in your bag or purse and not really worry about it taking up too much space. Also included in the package is a standard microUSB wall charger for the port on the back or you could just simply use it as a spare charger for your device. In addition to that, you also get a standard 2500 mAh battery that sits nice and snug into the slot it was meant for.

As a stand, it works as it should. Simply pop up the door to the charger portion and just sit your device in there, be it portrait or landscape. Both will work just fine though landscape will require some adjustment of the plastic door to ensure that it holds your device up. The stand portion has a rubber liner in it so that it grips your device and prevents it from moving about, it passed my test which is to go ahead and bang my hands on my desk to see if it would tip or fall over with any sort of ease -- it didn't so that's a win.

Given its thin profile, it also looks great sitting there. Also, I found it pretty easy to navigate around with my Galaxy Note in the stand. I mention that because you know you're going to do it anyway, be it on your desk or beside your bed watching some Netflix or whatever -- you're going to want to touch it at some point and knowing it won't tip over is good.

Overall, for the $39.95 you'll pay for it in the ShopAndroid Store you're essentially killing off multiple accessory purchases. You're getting a spare charger, a spare battery, a spare battery charger and a stand. If you were to buy them all separate, you'd be paying out a bit more then $39.95 that's for sure.

Google Releases A Playbook For ?Winning With Mobile?

jason speroAs Google continues to push businesses to embrace mobile advertising, it's trying to make that process a little less intimidating with a new publication titled "The Mobile Playbook: The Busy Executive's Guide to Winning with Mobile." The playbook is co-written by Jason Spero, Google's head of mobile sales and strategy (he joined through the acquisition of AdMob), who predicated in February that one million small businesses globally will build a mobile website this year. I don't think any of the advice is particularly revelatory, but it's still a nice distillation of how Google thinks businesses should build their mobile strategies.

House passes bill that would call for a single website tracking federal spending

ImageThe last time a proposed law captured our attention it was so widely loathed it was never even put to a vote, but today we bring you the kind of no-brainer legislation that seems to have strong support on both sides of the aisle. The US House of Representatives has passed the Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA), a bill that calls for the creation of an independent board to log all federal spending on a single, centralized website. What's more, these expenses need to be recorded with identifiers and markup languages that make them more easily searchable. As Computerworld notes, the vote happens to come on the heels of a recent dust-up involving the US General Services Administration spending $823,000 on a conference in Vegas -- precisely the sort of excess this proposed website would be designed to expose. The next step, of course, is for the bill to win Senate approval, though for now it seems the legislation has garnered strong bi-partisan support: in a rare showing, all of the lawmakers who discussed the DATA Act on the House floor argued in favor of it.

Wiz Khalifa Has 'No Ill Will' Toward Waka Flocka Flame

'I don't have problems with people, because if I do, I address it,' Wiz tells 'RapFix Live.'

Wiz Khalifa isn't interested in beefing with Waka Flocka Flame. In fact, he isn't interested in beefing with anyone.

"I don't have problems with people, because if I do, I address it," he said when he appeared on Wednesday's "RapFix Live." "If I feel someone disrespected me or if I feel like somebody was mentioning me in an indirect way I'ma find out how to talk to that person and then we'll squash it from there."

There have been rumors of a Wiz and Waka tiff, but it wasn't until Flocka's December interview with DJ Kay Slay on his Shade 45 satellite radio show that eyebrows began to rise. During the interview, Waka said that Wiz had "no swag" and "hyped" his way to the top.

Rather than address his feelings in the media, Khalifa said he'd rather wait to speak to the "O Let's Do It" rapper face to face. "What would I say to him? I really want to say it to him. We'll save it for that, it don't gotta be a public thing. It don't gotta be a peace meeting or nothing like that."

On Tuesday, Waka appeared on Angie Martinez's Hot 97 radio show in New York, and when he was asked about his problems with Wiz, Flocka said the issue was "deaded," but he didn't back down from his original statement. "I voiced my opinion because it's true and it's facts," he said before making some type of amends. "That's a nice guy he makes good music, I got cousins who like his music."

Whatever the case, Wiz won't feed into the negativity. "I never felt no ill will, he has his lane and when his songs come on in the club, people go crazy," Wiz said. "And people like to get high to Wiz Khalifa, so get used to it, baby."

Do you believe that there is serious underlying beef between Wiz Khalifa and Waka Flocka or is it all just media hype? Tell us in the comments.

Amazon CFO Dodges Questions On Antitrust, Patents, Kindle Plans

amazon logoAmazon just wrapped up its earnings call for the first quarter fo the year, and the most common phrase may have been, "I probably can't help you." To be fair, earnings calls are always a dance, where analysts try to pry more financial details and future plans out of executives, while executives don't want to give anything away. But today's call felt like a particularly egregious example ? anytime anything interesting was asked, CFO Tom Szkutak would say he couldn't help, then maybe offer an extremely vague answer.

Google Drive official: 5GB of free storage, Chrome web apps, Wave-like sharing and editing (video)

google drive

If it happened any other way, it just wouldn't be as satisfying, now would it? After years of leaks, murmurs, hubbub and other familiar synonyms, Google's mythical cloud storage platform is now official... sort of. As Lady Fate would have it, the company apparently outed a memo of the features on its French blog earlier today, but before it could yank the 'pull' switch, an eagle-eyed reader managed to grab the text and run it through -- surprise, surprise -- Google Translate. What's left is an official-as-you'll-get-right-now transcript of Google Drive's features, but contrary to the hype, it all feels way more enterprise-centric than consumers may have wanted. For starters, there's no real mention of music (we guess Google Music is on its own, there), and there's just 5GB of free storage for "documents, videos, photos, Google Docs, PDFs, etc." According to the brief, it's designed to let users "live, work and play in the cloud," with direct integration with Docs and Google+.

We're also told that Drive can be installed on one's Mac, PC or Android phone / tablet, while an iOS version will be "available in the coming weeks." Of note, Google's making this accessible to visually impaired consumers with the use of a screen reader. As for features? Naturally, Google's flexing its search muscles in as many ways as possible; if you scan in a newspaper clipping, a simple Search All within Drive will allow results to appear directly from said clipping. If you upload a shot of the Eiffel Tower, it'll show up whenever you search for the aforesaid icon. Moreover, Drive will allow folks to open over 30 types of documents directly from a web browser, including HD video, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and more -- "even without the software installed on your computer." For those concerned about access, the new platform will have the same infrastructure as any other Google Apps services, giving admins a familiar set of management tools on that end.

On the topic of storage, just 5GB are provided gratis, with 25GB costing $2.49 per month, 100GB running you $4.99 per month and 1TB demanding $49.99 per month, with a maximum of 16TB ($799.99 per month, if you're curious) per user; thankfully, Google Docs will not be included in your usage total. Finally, the note played up the ability to "attach documents directly into your Drive Gmail," and given that it's intended to be an open platform, Goog's promising to work with third party developers in order to enhance Drive's functionality even further. The source link below is still dead as of right now, but it simply can't be long before the lights are officially turned on. Oh, and if you're not enamored at the moment, the outfit's suggesting that "many more developments" will be arriving in the coming weeks.

Update: It's live on the Google Play store, and a pair of explanatory videos are embedded after the break!

140 characters to the clink: Occupy Wall Street protester loses battle to block Twitter subpoena

In a decision that's sure to be lost on this generation of over-sharers, Occupy Wall Street protester Malcolm Harris, arrested this past October during a Brooklyn Bridge demonstration, has just lost a legal battle to block prosecutors' attempts to subpoena three month's worth of his tweets. Chalking the ruling up to Twitter's terms of service, Judge Matthew Sciarrino Jr. concluded that the posted updates belong to the social networking company under license and, therefore, are fair game for use in the case "given their relevance." Harris, as expected, is in the process of filing a motion to reargue, but let this be a fair warning to our open online culture: what happens on the internet, stays on the internet forever. So you better watch what you tweet.

ST-Ericsson to pass off application processor business to STM, cut 1,700 jobs

ST-Ericsson to pass off application processor business to STM, cut 1,700 jobsIt's not every day that ST-Ericsson crosses our radar twice, but in addition to reportedly signing a deal with HTC for developing low-end handset chips, the company just announced its plans for a turnaround. The message? A heavier focus on SoCs for smartphones and tablets, along with a push for even more partnerships to develop those products. While that all sounds rosy, ST-Ericsson is also ceding its application processor business -- employees, R&D and all -- to STMicroelectronics. All told, between the loss of its application processor business and other reshuffling, the company expects to shed around 1,700 jobs -- and save about $320 million annually. Those bittersweet details and more await you in the press release after the break.
