Crowder leads Marquette past Murray State, 62-53

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ? Marquette has perfected the art of the comeback.

Down late yet again, Jae Crowder scored six points during a decisive 14-2 run, and the third-seeded Golden Eagles pulled away from Murray State for a 62-53 victory Saturday that sends the Golden Eagles into next weekend's West Regional semifinals.

Crowder finished with 17 points, 12 in the second half, and also had 13 rebounds. Darius Johnson-Odom also had 17 for Marquette (27-7).

"When you're playing a team like Murray State, they're going to keep throwing punches and throwing punches, and you have to find a way to slow them down," Johnson-Odom said. "We did a great job of that today."

Isaiah Canaan had 16 points and six rebounds for the sixth-seeded Racers (31-2), who fell just short of their first trip to the regional semifinals for the second time in three years. This one is sure to sting, too, even if it wasn't as gutwrenchingly close. Murray State lost to Butler 54-52 in 2010 when Gordon Hayward forced a Canaan turnover with about 10 seconds left.

The Racers have come a long way since. They won their first 23 games of the season, were the last team in the country to lose and showed against Marquette they can play with anyone.

"We proved today that we belong, and we belonged on a national stage," Racers coach Steve Prohm said. "We just weren't good enough the last seven minutes."

Give Marquette some credit for that.

Despite a decided size advantage ? Prohm joked Crowder and Johnson-Odom were missing spring practice somewhere ? the Golden Eagles could never quite get in sync against the speedy, aggressive Racers. That Marquette was essentially playing a road game couldn't have helped. Plenty of Racers fans made the three and a half hour drive for the game, and Kentucky fans jumped on the bandwagon in a show of state solidarity. When Jewuan Long made a layup to put the Racers up 46-41 with 7:43 to play, the crowd responded with the kind of roar usually reserved for that other Kentucky team.

But the Golden Eagles had plenty of practice at rallying during the regular season, when they came back to win six games after trailing by 11 or more points, and never doubted they could come back against the Racers.

"Eight minutes," Johnson-Odom said, "is like 30 minutes."

Todd Mayo made a pair of free throws, and Crowder banked in a jumper off the glass. Davante Gardner, who missed eight games at the end of the season with a left knee strain, followed with a layup and a pair of free throws to put Marquette back in front 49-46.

Ivan Aska briefly halted the Marquette run with a putback, but the Golden Eagles kept right on going. After another Gardner layup, Crowder took a charge and then came down to the other end and coolly drilled a 3, sending the outnumbered Marquette fans into a frenzy.

Even the university president, the Rev. Scott Pilarz, was pumping his fist and screaming, "We are! Marquette!"

"We were a couple plays from closing the game out, and I just wanted to make the next big play," said Crowder, the Big East player of the year. "I really wanted to make that play defensively, and it worked out in my favor. I just wanted to try to get a steal, a charge, a rebound, something. I just wanted to make that play. I knew at that time it was big in the game, and it was the next big stop that we needed."

Crowder added another free throw before Long was able to end a four-minute scoring drought. But it was too late. The Racers were just 2 of 12 with five turnovers over the last 7:43.

"I told them in the locker room that I just ? I wish I could have figured out a way to get them through the last seven minutes," Prohm said. "I don't think we wore down. We've got a tough, resilient group ... We just didn't finish some plays on the offensive end that we had to do in order to withstand some of their run-outs and some of their execution, and we didn't."

Long finished with 12 points, and Ed Daniel tied a career high with 14 rebounds. Murray State shot just 31 percent, including 9 of 35 in the second half.

Donte Poole, Murray State's second-leading scorer, managed only seven points, half his average. Poole was playing with a nose broken by an inadvertent elbow during Thursday's game.

"We thought we would come out with a win," Poole said. "So for it to end like this, you're upset, but you've just got to look at all the great things we've done this season, as well."

Marquette now looks to Phoenix, where it will play the winner of Norfolk State-Florida on Thursday. The Golden Eagles also made it to the regional semifinals last year before getting routed by North Carolina, and many expect them to go further this year now that Missouri is out of the way.

Not that the Golden Eagles want to hear any of that.

"I think it's even harder," Johnson-Odom said, who began shaking his head as soon as he heard the word "Missouri. "I don't think those seeds really mean too much of anything for us. We were an 11 seed, and we weren't expected to do anything last year. I think for us we're going to just have to stay focused on what we want to do, what's the goal for our team, things that we've been doing to continue the success we've been having."

East Timor votes in test for young nation

East Timor went to the polls Saturday in a presidential election seen as a crucial test for a young democracy taking charge of its own security as UN forces prepare to leave.

Voting that got off to a slow start after polls opened around 7:00am (2200 GMT Friday) picked up briskly by late morning, in a contest that pits the incumbent Jose Ramos-Horta, a Nobel peace laureate, against 11 other hopefuls.

At a school house in the village of Balibar, in the cool hills overlooking the capital Dili, poll workers in yellow T-shirts unsealed blue plastic boxes of ballots delivered under United Nations Police protection.

Voters, some carrying babies or toddlers and many barefoot, began trickling into the school about an hour after opening, in only the country's second presidential election as an independent nation.

The vote is the first in a series of key events in the poor and chronically unstable country still traumatised by Indonesia's brutal 24-year occupation, which ended with a vote for independence in 1999.

In May, East Timor will celebrate 10 years of independence, which came after three years of UN administration. Then, in June, voters will choose a new government in a general election.

At the end of the year the nation of 1.1 million people bids goodbye to UN forces stationed in the country since 1999.

Among East Timor's many problems is its heavy reliance on energy reserves, which account for around 90 percent of state revenues.

The country is labelled by the International Monetary Fund as the "most oil-dependent economy in the world", relying on a petroleum fund of $10 billion.

In an orderly fashion voters had their names checked against a list, then emerged from the village school house with coffee-coloured ink on their index fingers to indicate they had voted.

"It is an obligation for every citizen to vote because this is a democracy and we have the right to choose our own leaders," said Sidonia Perreira, a government clerk who walked to the school with his wife and two small children.

Poll workers led an old lady stooped over with age, and another handicapped woman barefoot and limping, by the hand as they arrived to vote.

Beyond the temporary polling stations, people in the half-island nation went about their morning business, many walking barefoot for their daily shopping at ramshackle roadside stands selling melons, coconuts and vegetables.

Constitutionally, the presidency is largely a ceremonial role, but its profile has been boosted by Ramos-Horta, who shared the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to resolve the independence conflict.

Indonesia's occupation of East Timor is estimated to have claimed up to 183,000 lives through genocide, disease and starvation.

The popular 62-year-old, who survived a 2008 assassination attempt, is the second post-independence president after Xanana Gusmao -- a former anti-Indonesia rebel leader who is now prime minister.

The race for the presidency is expected to be a three-way contest between Ramos-Horta, the Fretilin party's Francisco "Lu Olo" Guterres and former armed forces chief Taur Matan Ruak, a guerrilla leader during the occupation.

Candidates must garner more than 50 percent of the vote for an outright win, otherwise a run-off will be held in two weeks.

"There will be no second round. I am confident I will win today," Ruak told reporters shortly after voting at a Dili school crowded with voters, journalists, international observers and a stray dog nursing puppies.

Ramos-Horta won in a second-round of voting against Guterres in 2007, buoyed by the support of Gusmao's National Congress for the Reconstruction of East Timor (CNRT) party.

But this time the party is backing Ruak, amid signs that the president and prime minister no longer see eye-to-eye on many issues. Ramos-Horta has been increasingly critical of Gusmao's government.

Voting is expected to end around 0600 GMT and formal results are not expected until early next week.

International observers and representatives from Australia, the European Union and Portuguese-speaking nations are monitoring the vote.

(AP) ? Pump prices on his mind, President Barack Obama says Congress should kill tax breaks for the oil and gas industry and help develop alternative sources of energy.

Obama said Saturday in his weekly radio and Internet address that he expected Congress to consider in the next few weeks ending $4 billion in tax subsidies, a move he has failed to persuade lawmakers to make during his term. He said the vote would put them on record on whether they "stand up for oil companies" or "stand up for the American people."

"They can either place their bets on a fossil fuel from the last century or they can place their bets on America's future," Obama said.

Industry officials and many Republicans in Congress contend that cutting the tax breaks would lead to higher fuel prices, raising costs on oil companies and affecting their investments in exploration and production. The measure is considered a long shot, given that Obama couldn't end the subsidies when Democrats controlled Congress earlier in his term.

Republican presidential candidates have accused Obama of delaying drilling for oil in the Gulf of Mexico and in a national wildlife refuge in Alaska and faulted him for not advancing the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to Texas Gulf Coast refineries. They have also criticized policies pursued by the Environmental Protection Agency as inhibiting energy development.

Obama said there is no quick fix to high gas prices, which climbed to $3.83 on Friday according to AAA, but he pushed back against critics who say he is opposed to more drilling. He said the U.S. is producing more oil than at any time in the past eight years and has quadrupled the number of operating oil rigs.

"If we're truly going to make sure we're not at the mercy of spikes in gas prices every year, the answer isn't just to drill more ? because we're already drilling more," Obama said. He said his administration was trying to develop wind and solar power, biofuels and usher in more fuel-efficient vehicles to make the nation less dependent on oil.

In the weekly Republican address, Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said his constituents have been hard hit by an increase in gasoline prices and were "fed up with the way the president is handling this issue, and rightfully so. The most forceful thing the president has done about high gas prices is try to explain that he's against them."

Gardner said the $800 billion stimulus spending sought by Obama promoted energy companies that went bankrupt, wasting taxpayer money.

"After spending money we don't have on what won't work ? and overregulating what would ? is it any wonder gas prices have more than doubled on the president's watch? Make no mistake, high gas prices are a symptom of his failed 'stimulus' policies," Gardner said.

Obama is expected to keep up a drumbeat on energy this week, traveling to four states over two days to push his administration's "all of the above" energy strategy. The trip includes stops in Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Ohio.

Why Highlight Wasn?t A Breakout Success At SXSW

Screen Shot 2012-03-18 at 9.53.29 AMHighlight?is one of the most talked about apps out there. It was touted to be the breakout app at this year?s SXSW. But it wasn?t. In fact, almost everyone I?ve talked to who used it ended up turning it off or uninstalling it. (The same probably goes for?Glancee,?Sonar, etc.. but I only really tried and talked about Highlight.) I?ve had many discussions about the app and most have been really polarizing. Either people love the idea, or absolutely hate the idea. I find myself trying to have a more balanced opinion. Although I uninstalled it the first day, I think the overall concept of Highlight is interesting and with enough adoption, could be compelling for the right user. But SXSW was the wrong place for it to break. Here?s why.

Rick Santorum Declares War on Porn

Rick Santorum sees sex in purely utilitarian terms.

If it's not done with fertilizing an egg in mind, dude's got no love for it. Any such act (or product, or film, or contraceptive) is JUST PLAIN WRONG, PEOPLE!!

The Republican presidential candidate and staunch social conservative wants to ban hard core adult films, calling them toxic to marriage and relationships.

The former Pennsylvania senator writes on his website:

A Rick Santorum Image

"America is suffering from a pandemic of pornography. It contributes to misogyny and violence against women. It is a contributing factor to prostitution and sex trafficking."

He demands a crackdown on the distribution of Internet porn, in addition to material on cable/satellite TV, hotel/motel TV, retail shops and through the mail.

What qualifies as "hardcore" remains unclear.

Santorum says a "wealth of research" showing how pornography causes "profound brain changes in children and adults," and says President Obama doesn't do enough:

"The Obama administration turns a blind eye to those who wish to preserve our culture from the scourge of pornography and has refused to enforce obscenity laws."

"While the Obama Department of Justice seems to favor pornographers over children and families, that will change under a Santorum administration."

The White House hopeful, whose last name was hilariously Google bombed in response to his rampant homophobia, has been sounding this alarm for years.

Why a so-called defender of freedom on so many other issues is so against personal freedoms in a relationship sense, who the heck knows. But he means it!

Tuesday, Santorum won primaries in Alabama and Mississippi. Rick and rival Mitt Romney are both stumping in Puerto Rico ahead of their contest Sunday.

FOR KIDS: Too fast to be true

Human error, not new physics, may explain surprising speeds of tiny neutrinos

Web edition : 1:30 pm

Last September, scientists working on an Italian experiment called OPERA reported a measurement that seemed too amazing to be true. Their finding involved neutrinos, supersmall and ultrafast particles that can travel through almost anything without stopping. The scientists measured the speeds of neutrinos that zipped from one underground laboratory to another and reported that the zippy little particles traveled faster than light. In November, they repeated the experiment and got the same results.?

The OPERA results meant either our understanding of science is based on an error or something went wrong with the experiment. The explanation, as it turns out, has more to do with broken machinery than breaking the laws of physics.
