Discovery Communications CEO 'Excited to Grow' OWN This Year ...

Kristian Dowling/Picturegroup

NEW YORK - OWN, the cable network joint venture of Oprah Winfrey and Discovery Communications, is off to a good start this year, and "we are excited to grow this network in 2012," Discovery president and CEO David Zaslav said on his company's earnings conference call on Thursday.

OWN, which struggled in its launch year 2011, established a foundation for Winfrey's presence this year, he said. "The network learned a great deal about its audience, developing a wide array of new content and formats," reiterated in comments to analysts on the call.
?
"Oprah is now fully engaged with her creative leadership team, and OWN is off to a nice start in 2012 with her hit show Oprah's Next Chapter setting viewing records for the network when it premiered," he added. "Oprah will be featured in additional formats throughout the year."?

Our America With Lisa Ling and Sweetie Pies are two of the shows developed last year that are back in 2012, he highlighted.

Asked about OWN's expected profitability in 2012, outgoing CFO Brad Singer said the company doesn't comment on individual networks in terms of profitability.

Zaslav on Thursday also lauded the "significant strides" of kids joint venture network The Hub, in which Hasbro is Discovery's partner. The channel built its audience every quarter last year, with the fourth quarter, which provided the first apples-to-apples comparison since Hub's launch, seeing a 31 percent gain in all-day viewership among kids 2-11. "With a great slate of both new and returning series?it is poised to build its audience in the year ahead," vowed Zaslav.

Kennedy son Tim Shriver will write book on the Special Olympics

Special Olympics CEO Tim Shriver says his new book will focus on how the athletes involved in the competition have changed his life.

Tim Shriver, son of Kennedy daughter Eunice Shriver and R. Sargent Shriver, will be writing a book on his experiences with the Special Olympics.

In order to complete the writing process, Shriver said he will take time off from serving as CEO of the Special Olympics organization, which was founded by his mother. He said he wants the book to focus on how much he has learned from the competition.

?The athletes of this movement ? in their heroism, in their perseverance, in their courage, in their vulnerability ? there are really important lessons for a time and an age when people are really looking and seeking ways to find more fulfillment, more purpose, more peace ? in their lives,? Shriver said in an interview with the Associated Press.

He said he?s received important lessons from the athletes who participate in the Special Olympics.

?Here I am 50-plus years old and I think the athletes of this movement have taught me more about how to live this life than anyone,? Shriver told the Associated Press. ?There?s a lot more here than a charity. There?s a lot more than a cause."

There is no planned release date for the book yet, but Shriver said he may return to work by June. J. Brady Lum, the Special Olympics president and chief operating officer, will continue his role within the company with lead director of the Special Olympics International Board of Directors Stephen Carter taking on additional duties.

Shriver?s book will be released by publisher Farrar, Straus & Giroux.

Birthday turns into memorial for NKorean leader (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? Two months after the death of Kim Jong Il, North Koreans commemorated what would have been his 70th birthday Thursday with the flowers that bear his name, praising the longtime leader as a powerful but benevolent father figure while pledging fealty to the son who has taken his place.

In frigid Pyongyang, new leader Kim Jong Un, wearing a dark Mao suit and a solemn expression, led senior officials and military leaders into a hall in Kumsusan Memorial Palace to bow deeply before a large portrait of a smiling Kim Jong Il.

Hundreds more followed Kim Jong Un, lining up in rows in front of his father's portrait to pay their respects before filing out of the hall under the watch of a uniformed honor guard with rifles. A huge wreath of flowers stood near the portrait.

At Kim Il Sung Square, the main plaza in the capital city, North Koreans bowed and laid flowers, including red "kimjongilia" begonias, at another portrait of Kim Jong Il hanging on the Grand People's Study House. Among them was Paek Won Chol, who described himself as a "soldier and disciple" of Kim.

"I will devote my all for the building of a powerful and prosperous nation" under Kim's son, Kim Jong Un, Paek said.

Last month, top leaders of the Workers' Party announced that Kim Jong Il's body would lie in state at Kumsusan, where his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, already lies in state.

Among those paying respects with Kim Jong Un were the country's nominal head of state, Kim Yong Nam; Premier Choe Yong Rim; Kang Sok Ju, a vice premier who was Kim Jong Il's key foreign policy adviser; and Kim Ok, a woman believed to have been Kim Jong Il's companion.

The veneration of Kim Jong Il has accelerated in recent weeks, but festivities have been muted in light of his Dec. 17 death of a heart attack, which plunged the nation into mourning and propelled his young son into the seat of power just three years after he was anointed his father's successor. The leadership has emphasized Kim's legacy while praising Kim Jong Un as the only choice to lead this socialist nation of 24 million.

Kim Jong Il ruled with an iron fist for 17 years, a period that included a famine in the 1990s that killed hundreds of thousands of people and protracted tensions over the nation's drive to build nuclear weapons. Food shortages persist in North Korea and relations with South Korea are at their lowest point in years.

Composers have crafted new odes to Kim Jong Il, while sculptors have chiseled slogans honoring him into the sides of mountains. His birthday was renamed "Day of the Shining Star," and this week he was accorded a new title: Generalissimo.

Workers fanned out across the city this week to spruce up Pyongyang, though there were no indications that a major party was being planned. Workers crouched over frozen flower beds, chipping at the ice to plant flowers made of fabric.

By Wednesday, the red flag of the Workers' Party and the red, white and blue flag of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea ? North Korea's formal name ? fluttered from posts. Posters and banners honoring the Day of the Shining Star brightened up buildings and sidewalks.

Women donned shimmering traditional Korean dresses in a rainbow of colors for special concerts and exhibitions staged in Kim Jong Il's honor. People hurried down streets carrying plastic bouquets of four favorite flowers: red kimjongilia begonias, fuchsia kimilsungia orchids, and the pink and lavender azaleas favored by Kim Jong Il's mother.

On Tuesday, the nation's top political and military leaders assembled to watch the unveiling of the first bronze statue of Kim Jong Il. The sculpture, built at Kim Jong Un's request, depicts Kim Jong Il in his younger years astride a rearing horse with his father, also on horseback, at his side.

Portraits of Kim Jong Il show him smiling beatifically, and a stamp issued following his death captures him sharing a laugh with Kim Jong Un.

Those images are replicated across Pyongyang in huge portraits hanging at the People's Palace of Culture, a flower exhibition featuring his kimjongilia begonias and at a book fair at the Grand People's Study House.

It's an image that contrasts with Kim Jong Il in his later years, as he reportedly recovered from a stroke and battled chronic illness. He often appeared in public wearing a heavy parka and dark sunglasses.

The North's leadership has also sought to portray Kim as a defender of the nation, which has remained in a technical state of war with the United States since the 1950s, when the Korean War left the Korean Peninsula divided into north and south. During his rule, Kim focused on building nuclear weapons, calling them necessary protection against the U.S. military presence in South Korea even as they drew sanctions and cost the nation much-needed aid.

Kim Yong Nam, the nominal head of state, praised Kim on Tuesday for "turning our country into an invincible one that can never be defeated and has a nuclear deterrent."

Kim Jong Il is also being portrayed as a man of the people. While his father often wore a Western-style suit and tie, Kim Jong Il eschewed such formality. In his younger years, he wore a high-necked Mao suit; later in life, he stuck to a khaki work suit and, in winter, the parka.

One display at a stamp exhibition in Pyongyang paid homage to the leader's plebeian choice of clothing, calling it proof that he was devoted to working for the people. He was a man, according to state media, who died while working on the special train he took to provide "on-the-spot guidance" across the country.

While North Korea's leadership has venerated Kim, it has also emphasized Kim Jong Un's links to his revered grandfather, whom Kim Jong Un resembles in looks and style.

Shedding the quiet demeanor he displayed when his father was alive, Kim Jong Un wasted no time in asserting himself as the new leader, making energetic visits to military units seen as important to his father's "military first" policy.

North Koreans are celebrating the son as they remember the father at events that on Wednesday included an international skating show and a synchronized swimming show. Both opened with mournful odes to Kim Jong Il and ended with a new song for his son: "We Will Defend Gen. Kim Jong Un at the Risk of Our Lives."

(AP) ? While "Linsanity" consumes the NBA, not too many people are paying attention to San Antonio's winning streak.

That's just fine with the Spurs. They don't mind flying under the radar.

Tony Parker had 34 points and 14 assists, and the Spurs extended their season-best winning streak to nine games with a 113-106 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

"We've been on fire lately," Parker said. "We've been playing very good basketball, moving the ball great."

But are the Spurs the league's unsung heroes? Not according to Parker.

"There's no bigger story than Jeremy Lin right now," Parker said of the New York Knicks' sensation. "I'm happy for him. It's almost like you want to cheer for him. You want him to make every shot. His story is like a movie and he's performing every night right now."

Manu Ginobili, who scored 11 points in his third game back after missing a month with a broken left hand, echoed Parker's comments.

"I think New York deserves all the attention after all they've been through and what's happening right now," Ginobili said. "They draw attention from me: the New York game finishes and I go to see what they did. It's crazy."

Danny Green scored 13 points and matched his career high with seven rebounds and Tiago Splitter also had 13 points for the Spurs, who have not lost since a 101-100 overtime defeat at Dallas on Jan. 29.

But the winning streak is no big deal to the Spurs, who are hoping for more important victories come playoff time.

"No one is walking around here talking about (the streak), no one is sitting here focused on it," said Richard Jefferson, who scored 10. "It's more about how can we get better and how can we improve going into the next game?"

Parker went 12 for 12 from the foul line for San Antonio, which last won nine straight during a 10-0 stretch from Dec. 3-22, 2010.

"His 12 for 12 was really exciting because he works a lot on his shot and to have him do that is a real confidence builder," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said.

The victory was the sixth straight away from home for the Spurs, their longest run since winning eight straight road games to begin the 2010-11 season.

San Antonio's Tim Duncan failed to extend his run of five straight double-doubles, finishing with eight points and three rebounds.

DeMar DeRozan scored 29 points for the Raptors, who have lost three straight and eight of 10. Jose Calderon added 16 points and 11 assists.

Toronto guard Jerryd Bayless missed his fourth straight game with a sore left ankle, while forward Linas Kleiza was sidelined with a sore left knee. Leading scorer Andrea Bargnani sat for the 18th time in 20 games because of a strained left calf.

"We're a little undermanned," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said before the game. "If anybody is looking for a 10-day (contract), we're looking for bodies."

Toronto trailed by five points to begin the fourth, but used a pair of baskets by Calderon and a driving layup by DeRozan to cut it to one at 97-96 with 4:14 left.

San Antonio answered with a baseline jump shot by Gary Neal and a pair of free throws by Parker, restoring their five point advantage with 3:25 left.

Parker made all eight of his free-throw attempts down the stretch as the Spurs improved to 23-9 all-time against Toronto.

Casey said Parker has developed into "the whole package."

"The last couple of weeks, he's been playing at a big time level," Casey said. "He's one of my favorite players. He's so slithery and so quick and now he's gotten a little strength. He makes it tough to get into him and guard him in these situations. Now he's developed a jump shot, so you have to honor that."

Green got all seven of his rebounds and made three of San Antonio's six 3-pointers in the opening half as the Spurs, who shot 6 for 10 from beyond the arc, led 55-45 at the break.

Toronto battled back by making its first 10 shots of the second half. DeRozan scored 13 points in less than six minutes, including two on a reverse alley-oop from Calderon, and the Raptors followed with a layup from James Johnson that tied it at 66.

San Antonio answered with a 13-4 run over the next four minutes, taking a 79-70 lead and forcing Toronto to call timeout. The Spurs led 83-78 heading to the fourth.

Notes: Parker's career high in assists is 17, set Jan. 23 at New Orleans. ... The Spurs, who evened their road record at 8-8, have four games remaining on their season-long nine game road trip. They don't play again until Saturday against the Clippers, giving them a couple of days at home to break up the trip. ... San Antonio rookie Cory Joseph became the eighth Canadian-born player to appear in a game in Toronto. Cavaliers rookie Tristan Thompson, Joseph's college teammate at Texas, also played in his hometown on Jan. 4.

8 Ways to Make a Friend Feel Special on Valentine's Day ...

For many women (and some men), Valentine's Day means much more than hearts, chocolates, and roses; the affection they feel on that day extends beyond lovers to their close friends and relatives, too.

Whether you celebrate Valentine's Day or the D?a del amor y la Amistad (Day of Love and Friendship)?as do many Latin Americans?February 14th offers a perfect opportunity to show affection for close friends, who add so much to our lives.

Since even the strongest of friendships needs to be nurtured, here are eight ways to let your closet friends know how important they are to you on Valentine's Day (or any other day of your choosing):

1)? Say it in words. Call her or write her a card, note or email telling her just how much her friendship means to you. After all, Valentine's Day gives everyone license to act a bit more affectionate than usual.

2)? Remind her visually. Send her a photo of a wonderful time you had together in the past and tell her how happy it makes you feel that you're still friends after all those years.

3)? Give her the gift of time. Instead of continually saying, "We have to get together," make concrete plans. Get out your electronic calendar or datebook and set a time when you can spend quality time together?even if it's just over a cup of coffee.

4)? Plan a getaway or trip together. Perhaps you've both been busy and haven't seen each other for a while. Your lives have diverged yet you still feel like you're kindred spirits. Make a relaxed lunch date, spa date, or commit to a weekend when you have uninterrupted time to make new memories.

5)? Weave her into the fabric of your life. If she's single and you're married with children, invite her to join one or more of your family traditions. If you think she might enjoy the company of another close friend of yours, introduce them to each other. Introduce her to your mother, sister or cousin.

6)? Do something together. Suggest that you both read the same book or go to a movie so you can talk about it afterwards. It can be a great springboard for discussing feelings and values.

7)? If something has recently gotten in the way of your friendship and you believe you may have been at fault, don't be too big to apologize.

8) Express your love. Yesterday, I posted a rememberance on The Friendship Blog about the tragic and untimely death or Jeffrey Zaslow, author of The Girls from Ames, The Magic Room, and many other wonderful works that read like love stories. He reminded people of a lesson he learned from Randy Pausch?to take the time to hug the people they care about. What could be more fitting than a hug or a kiss?

Have you recently shown a friend how much you care? What did you do?

This is a slightly revised version of a post that I posted previously on The Friendship Blog. In memory to my Dad who died on Valentine's Day, 2006, the day of my parent's 60th anniversary.

Regarding trading currency on forex? - Finance Learning Center

I already read and hear about currency trading on forex. And i found out that the broker will charge the trader the spread.
But i have a small doubt about that.
Let?s take this example:
I have $ 10,000 in my account, and the broker will charge 1 pip ?> $ 1
I placed an order to buy at EUR/USD at 1.3450/51.
I will see a negative balance in my account.
Now, let?s say that i didn?t make any trading for two weeks.
During this time, the EUR/USD will be moving up and down many times.
Will the broker charge me spread during the this period (again, i didn?t do any kind of buy or sell)?

How ever, after two weeks, the EUR/USD is 13670/71
Now, i will sell currency at this price. Obviously the broker will charge spread and i will make some good profits.

In other words, during the period, i did only two trade orders, and the borker will charge me twice only (for one buy and one sell).
Am i correct?
One more question, is it ok if i don?t trade much (just wait for big high and low)?
Will the broker charge me any extra for that?
Thank you for help
Assume that i open a trade and i kept it open for two weeks, then i closed it.
will the broker charge me?
To alexi:

So, i understand from you that holding my position for more than one day means that i will either pay or recieve interest rate in my account.

Can you tell me around how much is the interest rate?
